Professional Surgical Leadership

Mr Barlow has dedicated himself to his cardiac surgery patients and also to his professional cardiac organisations, his surgical trainees, his hospitals and the wider NHS for over 20 years.

Mr Barlow holds various leadership roles at University Hospital Southampton and is currently the unit Representative for the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS). He was formerly Meeting Secretary and served on the Executive of the SCTS. Regionally he is Cardiac Surgical Lead for the Wessex Cardiac Network. He is Representative for Cardiothoracic Surgery for South Central England with the Royal College of Surgeons Professional Affairs Board.  His extensive involvement in the final examination in cardiothoracic surgery for the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations includes representing the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow on the Intercollegiate Cardiothoracic Examination Board and Cardiothoracic Surgery on the Internal Quality Assurance Committee. Mr Barlow is the first International Chairman of the Membership Committee of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and is currently on the Program Committee for the 2021 Annual meeting. He has also served on the Centennial and Wellness committees of this most prestigious organization. 

Mr Barlow’s additional professional affiliations include: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association, American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
